Winter tyre test 2023

This video tests 11 of the most talked about winter tyres. The tyre size is 225/45 R18.

First up are the snow tests: how each tyre behaves in those snowy conditions we all hate. Then we look at how these tyres perform on dry and wet roads. You get to see how they offer grip, how they steer and how they make you feel behind the wheel, plus the all-important braking.

Comfort is also on the agenda, we look at how these tyres perform on bumpy roads and last but not least, we look at rolling resistance which affects your fuel efficiency.

In this winter tyre test, we have:

  • Bridgestone Blizzak LM005
  • LEAO WINTER DEFENDER
  • Continental WinterContact TS870P
  • Falken EUROWINTER HS02 PRO
  • Giti GitiWinterW2

Summer tyres

The unique rubber compound gives summer tyres a better grip on the road during warmer periods. Moreover, summer tyres wear less quickly than winter or all-season tyres during these periods. A summer tyre's coarser tread also increases grip at higher temperatures.

Winter tyres are not adapted to summer conditions. Continuing to drive on winter tyres in summer is less safe and more expensive. At higher temperatures, the rubber of winter tyres becomes too soft. This affects grip and increases wear. We therefore recommend fitting summer tyres from 15 March onwards.

All-season tyres

The biggest advantage of the all-season or four-season tyre is its hassle-free nature. You do not need to have your car tyres replaced twice a year at our tyre centre. The rubber and tread offer sufficient grip in almost all not too extreme weather conditions. But in extreme weather conditions, a good winter tyre is still preferred.

A four-season tyre does wear faster than a summer tyre in higher temperatures because the compound of an all-season is softer.

Winter tyres

Winter tyres have remarkably better grip in winter conditions. This is due to a modified rubber compound and finer grooves in the tread. In Belgium, it is recommended to fit winter tyres under the car from 1 October. Then you can enjoy winter tyres to the full.
